Due to engineering work taking place on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) on weekends during January. Main Line passenger services were diverted around the Durham Coast/ Hartlepool. With National Express East Coast (NXEC) running hourly Newcastle- Kings Cross services via the Coast.

Due to a shortage of trains due to the diverts. NXEC had to hire an extra High Speed Train (HST) set in from Cross Country. 43301 heads south through Hartlepool with a diverted NXEC service. 3rd January 2009.
